On Tuesday, my Policy Advisor/Field Representative Logan Ueno attended the University of California, Irvine Briefing on Sustainability. The event provided insights into UCI’s efforts and research towards creating a more sustainable future. During the briefing, Logan toured two labs: The Kisailus Lab and the Yang Lab.

The Kisailus Lab focuses on biomimetics and nanostructured materials. During the tour, Dr. Kisailus explained how their research involves studying the formation mechanisms of biological minerals to replicate and design biomimetic composite structures. The highlight of the Kisailus Lab tour was the 500-gallon tropical and cold-water system housing various underwater sea creatures, including mantis shrimp with their biological hammers capable of smashing tough bio-composites.

The Yang Lab researches electrochemistry, synthesis, and catalysis with a focus on sustainability. There was extensive discussion on capturing and reducing carbon dioxide. One fascinating aspect was the research on converting captured CO2 gas into methane gas, creating biofuel. Additionally, the lab is exploring ways to capture CO2 gas within Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems to reduce the amount of outside air needed to cool or heat buildings, thereby saving energy. The Yang Lab’s innovative work has been patented and is poised to make a significant impact in the industry.

Thank you to UCI for a great tour and insight on the future of sustainability here in Orange County.

Yesterday, at the Orange City Council meeting, I had the honor to present certificates of recognition to the Orange Police Chief Dan Adam and his officers Jude King and John Jensen for their invaluable contribution to our Anonymous Gun Buyback event with Supervisor Vicente Sarmiento in Anaheim on May 11, 2024.

Under the leadership of the Anaheim Police Department and through collaboration with multiple cities and police departments, including Brea, Buena Park, Fullerton, La Habra, Orange, and Placentia along with OC Sheriff Department’s Bomb Squad.

This initiative not only allowed residents to safely dispose of unwanted guns in exchange for gift cards but also provided them with gun lock boxes for secure storage at home.

As an advocate for public safety and having initiated Orange County’s first Anonymous Gun Buyback in October 2022 in Placentia, which collected over 420 guns including 16 automatic rifles, it was imperative for me to continue these efforts.

Our recent event in Anaheim saw a collection of 337 firearms including 37 assault weapons which adds up to a total of 757 firearms including 53 assault weapons collected through these events.

Thank you to all participating officers from the Orange Police Department for your service and commitment towards making Orange County safer.

Today at the Board of Supervisors Meeting we recognized July 21-27 as Probation Services Week.

The Orange County Probation Department plays an essential role in the criminal justice system, connecting individuals to the support they need. Probation officers are focused on helping adult and juvenile offenders transition out of the system permanently through transformative and evidence-based programming.

Our Probation Department has an immense impact, not only on justice-involved individuals, but also on our communities, through mentorship and guidance toward positive life choices.

I would like to express my gratitude each probation officer and staff member throughout Orange County for their critical work and dedicated public service.
