Last night, my Chief of Staff, Al Jabbar, and I celebrated an extraordinary evening at the Access California Services (AccessCalโ€™s) Gala 2024.

AccessCal was founded by Nahla Kayli in 1998 as a a culturally and linguistically competent health and human services nonprofit in Anaheim, dedicated to empowering all underserved populations, with a focus on Arab-American and Muslim-American communities.

During the event, AccessCal showcased their incredible work at providing 152 programs at no charge to 15,000 immigrants and refugees annually in Orange County. These programs include employment assistance, to English tutoring and life skills training, to adult day care and child enrichment, to immigration and legal assistance, and more.

We also celebrated AccessCalโ€™s move to their new home - a larger facility in the City of Anaheim.

Lastly, AccessCal honored their incredible partners during an award ceremony:

๐Ÿ† Commitment and Dedication Award ~ Ameera Basmadji, AccessCalโ€™s Director of Funds and Research Development

๐Ÿ† Advancing Equity Leadership Award ~ Michael Hunn, CalOptima Healthโ€™s Chief Executive Officer

๐Ÿ† Women Empowerment Award ~ Dr. Dhamim Inbrahim, LMFT, Founder and Executive Director of Niwsa Association, Inc.

๐Ÿ† Visionary Leadership Award ~ Dr. Ahmed Soboh, DDS, Dentist at Soboh Dental

Thank you to AccessCal for your dedication to serving the underserved with compassion and dignity.

Today, Chairman Don Wagner and I sponsored a resolution to recognize March 2nd as Ethiopian American Day in Orange County.

Ethiopia is one of the worldโ€™s oldest countries, located in the Horn of Africa, with a deep and interesting culture. Southern California is home to a growing Ethiopian American community that has worked tirelessly to share and educate their neighbors of their customs.

I am glad we brought this resolution forward and recognized the contributions of the Ethiopian American community in Orange County.

Today, at the Orange County Board of Supervisors meeting, we recognized February as Black History Month.

Black History Month was first recognized by President Gerald Ford in 1976, to commemorate the often over-looked contributions of African Americans in the United States.

I was honored to join my colleagues today to recognize Black History Month and acknowledge the leaders who are working to uplift the African American community in Orange County.

On Saturday, the Clerk-Recorder Department Orange County CA had special hours at the Old Orange County Courthouse from 10am to 3pm for couples to say โ€œI doโ€.

Couples were able to get married Saturday, on that auspicious day, 2-24-2024, a truly rememberable anniversary date.

I want to thank the Clerk Recorderโ€™s office for inviting me to join them Saturday in officiating 7 weddings.

Congratulations to all the couples that got married! ๐Ÿ’๐Ÿ’’

Yesterday, I had the honor to attend the ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the new Placentia Fire and Life Safety Department Headquarters ,and the Placentia Chamber of Commerce office and visitor center at Old City Hall.

Old Placentia City Hall was opened to the public in August 1940. The building was constructed as a Great Depression-Era Works Progress Administration project. As part of a large renovation of this facility the City recently replaced the roof and HVAC equipment, and remodeled the restrooms so they are ADA-compliant. The renovations allow for its continued use and keep the charm of its old style facade.

Thank you to the city of Placentia for hosting the ceremony and their Public Works Department for the renovation of a building that represents Placentiaโ€™s past and future. Congratulations to Placentia Fire and Life Safety Department and Placentia Chamber of Commerce on your grand opening.
